Kuhn Rikon Hotpan Braiser 4.8 Quart, Orange

cool stuff
It is nice to have one at home to save energy.
Easy to clean and useful. However, the price is high to pay . That will be the only to consider if you are looking for a cheap one.
Very good quality from Swiss!!
a very nice braiser
I have been using kuhn rikon cooking pans for more than 30 years. The quality has been improved since then.

Kuhn Rikon Duromatic Family Style Pressure Cooker Braiser 5 Quart

prefer this size and shape to other cookers
while this kuhn rikon is certainly pricey compared to other cookers, the quality and elegance is unsurpassed by anything out on the market. i really like the shape of this particular model because it allows me to easily braise and cook whole pork loins or roasts since the opening is flatter and shallower then KR's other models. Kuhn also sells a pyrex glass lid that fits on this cooker so it can be pressed into service as a giant saucepan or skillet, or for bringing food directly to the table in the pot. this cooker is almost always used in our kitchen for meal preparation - can't imagine life without it!
Years of use
This is one of the best investments I have ever made in a cooking pot. I was reluctant to buy it initially because it is expensive, but I have been using it steadily for ten years now and it's just great. I use it to make Osso Bucco, I braise lamb shanks and make venison stews. I prepare beets with it. It handles pot roasts and briscits very nicely. It significantly shortens cooking time and I find that many dishes that benefit from long cooking with an overnight rest can be be prepared for same day meals. There is a trick.... Since it takes very little time, relatively speaking, to braise something you have time to to let the dish rest for an hour or so to come together. You can then reheat it and you have something that would have required several hours of cooking all done in less than half the time and it gets the benefit of the resting time. If it didn't cost so much, I would have two. It's big enough to make braised shanks or coq au van for a family or a number of quests. The...
Kuhn Rikon pressure cooker
Awesome quality and it is not made in China. Great product, expensive but rest assured the last one you will need to buy. Get the lid with this and make a dual purpose item. Again the finish and the quality of this item is awesome. Great solid shiny stainless.

Kuhn Rikon 5-Quart Hotpan Stockpot, Green

perfect pot
This pot is perfect.
I used it for sir fry, stock, or stew.
It can be used for anything you could think of.
It heats up very evenly and never burns my food.
My mother-in-law loved it so much that she took mine when visiting so I am buying another one for myself again.
It's a bit expensive but I'll say the money is very well spent!!!

Kuhn Rikon 3344 7.4-Quart Stainless-Steel Pressure Cooker

Easy to Use
My grandmother and my mother both used pressure cookers frequently. When I was younger, one of the first kitchen items I purchased was a pressure cooker of my very own (a Hawkins Futura jiggle-type, which still works perfectly).

Recently, I decided to purchase the 7 liter Kuhn Rikon, primarily because it is larger than my Futura. Some other reviewers have noted that the Kuhn Rikon requires more monitoring than jiggle-type pressure cookers. This is only somewhat true. Jiggle-type pressure cookers release steam throughout the cooking process. This provides confirmation that the cooker is operating through sound. It IS convenient if this is what you are used to. However, these cookers require more liquid to achieve pressure and as a result, certain items can come out more watery than I prefer. You can boil away the excess liquid after releasing pressure, but then you lose some of the time saved.

The Kuhn Rikon uses an advanced enclosed system. As a result,...
WOW! NOW you're cooking with steam! This POT Rocks!
And I thought I knew what a `good' pressure cooker was! And boy does this save energy!

A friend recommend this model to me when I was looking at new pressure cookers. My old family hand-me down Presto worked, but the cap with the white lines that popped up wasn't popping up - and I detest the `rocker' pots - noisy, and to me, dangerous. So I was looking for a new PC and I was on the fence between this model and the one without the long handle. GET THIS ONE. It might seem a bit awkward at first, but if you have ever lifted a pot of pot roast or 6 Liters of Bean Soup, you know how heavy it can be! - and the long handle saves the day! And I have to say that I own several `large' pressure cookers for canning, but only had the 1940's-early 1950's pressure cooker from my grandmother for cooking.

Before I go too far I also have to say that I went to school with a friend who became a beach-bum in the South Pacific - Degrees in Environmental Engineering and Enviro...
Great pressure cooker!
I bought the Kuhn Rikon pressure cooker after the New York Times called it 'the Mercedes Benz among pressure cookers'. And even though I haven't tried any other cookers (so I can't compare) I am totally happy with it. I'm actually spoiled, I got two of these! I use them all the time! I usually make recipes out of the cookbooks 'Great Vegetarian Cooking Under Pressure' and 'Complete Vegetarian Kitchen'. Both books are by Lorna Sass. She is an expert on pressure cooking and gives a lot of nice helpful pressure cooking recipes, tips and charts in these books.

If you want to buy a flame tamer for your cooker (highly recommended), please get the Kuhn Rikon one! It's a bit expensive, but the two other ones I tried ended up in the trash can.

I also recommend buying an 'Ohsawa Pot'. When you make rice straight in a pressure cooker it is very sticky and can get stuck to the bottom. With this pot (which you place in the pressure cooker), you get absolutely delicious rice...

Kuhn Rikon Hotpan Braiser 4.5 Quart, Green

It is a wonderful pot for every cook
it is a fantastic pot, and i love it. It can save more energy.
my sister and i highly recommend it!
Great addition to my kitchen
My friend recommended this pan to me. So I went ahead and bought one. It is wonderful, even my husband loves it. I don't have a braiser type of pan. This works great. It keeps food hot all afternoon. The beef was tender, by the time I took it out. I will get another one, in the near future.

Kuhn Rikon Durotherm Swiss-Made Cookware, Casserole with Lid, 9-Inch - 3QT

Great Pot
I have purchased 3 different sizes over the years since 1988. It helps to keep the food warm and ready to serve by removing the lid!
Amazing Pot!
My Kuhn-Rikon 2-Liter Swiss Thermal Casserole with a lid is the perfect pot and perfect size for cooking for one person. I can "steam" my broccoli, tender-tasty-and nutritious. None of the nutrients are lost. I save energy as well. The pot continues to cook when taken off the gas burner. I plan to cook one-pot meals in it. I know they will be perfect, as well.

Kuhn Rikon Duromatic Family Style Pressure Cooker Stockpot 8 Quart

Subtantial, beautiful and excellent.
I have the 2.5l Braiser and 6l pot as well and don't regret spending extra for the Kuhn Rikon brand. I never used pressure cookers before and now I find myself planning all my meals around this appliance and can have all 3 going at once. The mechanisms are flawless, clean up is a breeze and this size can easily hold a good Sunday roast. These are gorgeous pots that look good on a stove top and to keep them looking good I store the lid upside down in the pot with a towel between them so the metal cannot mark. I also keep the rubber gasket in the pot while it's not in use, it's quick and easy to pop it into the lid when the time comes.
Awesome Pressure Cooker
Oh my gosh....I love my new pressure cooker. I am VERY happy that I spent the extra money to buy this pot. I feel very safe using this pot with all of the safety features. I did like the book suggested and test drove my new pot with water in it so I would learn what to expect. I couldn't be happier. I only wished I had made this purchase years ago. I made pulled pork today with a pork roast in 2hours With my electric stove turned all the way down. My son cooked the same roast today in the crock pot and it took 6hours. I am in love. I'm cooking southwest chicken soup tomorrow. My husband is thrilled with all the delicious food. The cooker really seals in the flavor and cooks very quickly. I'm on the Internet every day looking for new ideas to cook in my pot. I even made my own broth today. You will not be disappointed with this pot. Happy Cooking!
i forgot to mention that it took me a few days to decide whether I would need an 8 or 12 qt pot. I'm glad I chose the 8qt for every...
BUY IT !
Initially I was hesitant to buy it because of the significant price difference with the other pressure cookers, finally after lots of thinking,I decided to get the family style 8 qt stockpot.
I cannot be happier with this purchase. I am able to cook delicious, wholesome food in a short period of time. The operation is also very simple and quiet.
I am looking forward to try new recipes using this cooker.
I love this pressure cooker so much, I am planning to install a bigger sink in the kitchen!
You definitely get what you paid for!

Kuhn Rikon 3342 5-1/4-Quart Stainless-Steel Pressure Cooker

The best pressure cooker I have used so far
I've gone through 4 or 5 pressure cookers in the last 10 years, and I think I've finally found one I like. I work full time (40-60 hours a week), and I like to cook, so the time saved by pressure cooking is important to me. I use the pressure cooker mostly for meat, potatoes, beans and lentils. Typically, meat cooks in about 1/3 the time it would take in a regular pot. Pressure cooked meat is very tender and flavorful, but you need some experience in matching the cooking time to the type of meat. You have to be careful not to overcook.

The construction and finish of this cooker are excellent. It is made of stainless steel, with a thick aluminum plate at the bottom to spread the heat. This is a useful feature. Typically, pressure cooking requires high heat initially to quickly build up steam pressure before you turn the heat down. That is when food can burn and stick to the bottom of the cooker. This cooker spreads heat very well. So long as you use the prescribed amount of water or...
Mom under pressure
As a mom of two active boys I need my Duromatic pressure cooker almost every day. Especially after swimming they are starving and want real food fast! A standard dish is my 7 mintues risotto.I just throw in whatever I can find in the fridge or follow the great recipe provided in the cookbook "Quick Cuisine" that comes with the cooker. For all of you out there who are afraid of pressure cookers I have this to say: This unit is a high tech and safe as your computer! It's so easy to use even my husband can do it. Some of my favorit dishes: Beef stew, BBQ pot roast, beets, corn on the cob (no boiling 10 gallons of water) potatos for mashed or salad, whole chicken in 20 minutes! Well you just have to try it out. This cooker is the best--my kids will tell you so.
Mercedes Benz - Not the Most Reliable
Let me carry the analogy of New York Times a little further - this pressure cooker does have nifty features that other's do not, but...(a) it is expensive, (b) not the most reliable cooker, (c) maintenance costs a lot, (d) you really can live without those nifty features.

Being Indian, I grew up in a house where pressure cooker was used at least once a day. In Indian grocery stores, pressure cookers are available at a third, or fourth of the price, so this pressure cooker is expensive. But it does look better, and has nifty features.

As another reviewer pointed out it is not the most reliable cooker as some plastic parts have poor quality. In my cooker, a plastic part in the steam-deflector disk broke within two weeks. There goes one of the nifty features. After two years of daily use, auxiliary pressure valve is mal-functioning, main pressure valve often gets stuck ( and makes a mess by spurtting out water), handles are cracking, and coming loose easily. One...

Kuhn Rikon 3916 Duromatic Top Pressure Cooker, 5-Quart

Mercedes of Pressure Cookers
There's a good reason why the New York times reviewed this product and tagged it "The Mercedes of Pressure Cookers". This efficient piece of cookware is precision engineered and made in a modern Swiss factory where the best cookers have been made since the safe Durotherm was first developed here. On a visit to the factory we saw a clean, efficient facility which employs re-settled Tibetan refugees and uses robotics to shape these precision pots. The Duromatic factory adheres to high standards of European green manufacturing methods while producing a product as precision made as a Swiss watch.
The proof is in the cooking. We love our Duromatics, and have several in our home. For one thing it is quiet compared to older versions of pressure cookers, and safer due to several safety-release valves. When we cook things like split pea soup and roasted chicken we get perfect results with much less energy, heat, and cooking time than any other method of cookery. Once you cook artichokes...
Changed our culinary life!!
WOW! have been using our Kuhn Rikon for about 5 years & can't imagine life without being able to make bean dishes anytime I want after work. Goodbye soaking, goodbye planning ahead. Hello spontaneous & speedy black-eyed peas, split pea soup & hummous from scratch.

Had been scared of pressure cookers. Lived in France in high school & remember ours exploding every couple of months - spewing soup everywhere. Heard they'd "modernized" the cookers & then researched the heck out of all the ones on the market. Took the leap w/ this one because of the redundant safety features. Was terrified to try it the first time, but have never ever ever had it explode - even when I've forgotten to turn it down after it got up to pressure (thanks to the automatic safety pressure-release).

And when you first taste how deeply spices penetrate curry dishes, soups and beans -- you'll be hooked. Not one ounce of regret for spending the extra $$ for this ultra-safe "BMW-quality"...
Excellent pressure cooker
So, I've never used a pressure cooker (PC) and was a bit afraid. I read about the electric PC's and decided the stovetop model was better because 1) gas is cheaper than electricity 2) no circuit board to break one week out of warranty and 3) I can brown meats in this monster before sealing the top. This is the Rolls Royce of pressure cookers from everything I read so I splurged and spent the money. Over 10+ years, what does $80 mean in all honesty?

Regarding the electric PC's. I read all the reviews and continually found people complaining about sealing problems, faulty buttons, the machine switching from pressure to warming mode, etc. Kuhn Ricon (KR) models have consistently received the most positive reviews, which sealed my decision. I've got enough electric appliances anyway.

As for safety, there is no way this thing is going to blow up unless you are clueless and don't follow simple instructions. If the pressure builds up too much, it automatically releases...

Kuhn Rikon Duromatic Top Pressure Cooker 7.4-Quart

Do RESEARCH-Be AWARE
This pressure cooker is probably the best on the market and a perfect size for a family. But, watch what you are purchasing, there are 2 separate types of lids on the Duromatic pressure cooker. This is the superior lid as it is easier to see the pressure, and turn it down to appropriate settings-fast release, slow release, with minimal effort. The other Kuhn Rikon's are awesome too. As far as I can tell, they are the same, with the exception of the lid/release. If you have the extra money, this is worth it--especially if you are a beginner. I regret that I bought the duromatic set without realizing the difference in the lids. I guess on the bright side, it means that I have pressure cookers in different sizes now.

If you are nervous about pressure cooking, there are awesome books out there to help lead the way-including pressuring cooking for dummies. My favorite is Miss Vickies Book of Pressure Cooker recipes, also found on amazon. She also has a website that...
My favorite kitchen appliance
I grew up watching my mother use a pressure cooker with a balancing weight on the lid - and constantly terrified that it was going to explode.

It has taken me 20 years to get over that fear - and after doing a lot of research, I finally bought a Kuhn Rikon Duromatic Pressure Cooker. As a working mother with two young children, I have NO IDEA how anyone survives without a pressure cooker. I use mine almost every day. Unlike a slow cooker, I'm not worried about whether my house is burning down because I left the slow cooker .... cooking.

I started with spareribs, which after 15 minutes tasted like they had been braised for 3 hours. Then I moved on to risotto, which after 6 minutes is delicious, creamy, and tastes like I slaved over the stove stirring it constantly for an hour. I have also made soups, which are quick and easy.

The pot is easy to use, easy to clean, and safe. Rather than wasting gas/electricity simmering a dish for hours, it's...
Maybe everyone should have one of these
My wife recently mentioned that most people have pressure cookers. I don't know about that... but, now that we bought this Kuhn Rikon 7.4 quart pot, I have to say that I am very impressed and I feel I've been strangely uninformed all these years about the capabilities of a pressure cooker.

I've organized my thoughts into two categories: pressure cooking in general, and this Kuhn Rikon product specifically.

Regarding the magic of pressure cooking, we've tried a variety of items, including mashed potatoes, ribs and one-pot meals. They turned out very well. They were quick. They were simple. The pot cleaned up easily. The flavors seemed to be more "sophisticated" than I've typically produced on the stove. The flavors were all blended together as if they'd been simmering for hours. All in a matter of minutes. Pressure cooking authors Lorna Sass and Vickie Smith each offer pretty good cookbooks with plenty of good advice and recipes to newbies like myself...

Kuhn Rikon 6-Piece Duromatic Duo Pressure Cooker Set

This can be your favorite cookware in your kitchen!
We tried so many pressure cookers over the years as Indian Cooking demands heavy use of pressure cooking for making lentil soups and curries. We even tried few models from India but none could last more than a few years. Either they have problems with safety valves, handles, or they would become loose too often that requires tightenening of handles. If they last well, they were too bulky and takes almost forever to open and close the lid. Most annoying of all, they all make crazy sound that scares both my kids.

Kuhn Rikon pressure cookers sure have expensive prices but once you see them and feel them, you will find every reason to agree that they are well worth the price. This particular 2 set model is so lovely that my wife decided to get rid of most of her cookware as they both compliment each other so well. They can be used for almost everything we cook for our daily needs. The lids are interchangeable. This makes it so convenient to pressure cook veggies and lentils and then...
Great Pressure Cookers! (Edited April 2010)
I purchased the Kuhn Rikon Duo Set recently because I had heard the 2nd generation pressure cookers are much safer and quieter than the older models. I have not been disappointed and am no longer afraid of pressure cooking! As a matter of fact, I have been so pleased with this set that I have been cooking with it at least 4 or 5 times a week. Our family is "back to two" again, and the pressure frypan is just perfect for a few pork chops, meatballs, or other small portions of meat. I love yams, but didn't serve them often because it takes about an hour and a half to cook them in a conventional oven. In my new pressure frypan, yams only take about 10 - 12 minutes, and they come out perfect every time with no "hard" spots. I have also used the pressure frypan for carrots and corn on the cob with excellent results. I am equally pleased with the 5L pressure cooker. The glass and pressure lids are interchangable between the 5L cooker and the 2L frypan, and the cookers are so quiet,...
Kuhn Rikon 4 Piece Duromatic Pressure Cooker
Excellent set, easy to use and will last beyond its ten year guarantee. I use the pressure frypan to cook macrobiotic rice or oatmeal. After 50 minutes of high pressure cooking, I get perfect brown rice or oatmeal(no sticking or burning). Once you know the stove setting required to maintain pressure, you can almost forget it. However, as with any cooking device, I monitor it periodically. The pressure pot and frypan have flat bottoms which makes food preparation and cleaning a breeze. The glass lid was a major selling point, as it enables conventional use of both pots.

My wife makes succulent turkey drumsticks in only eight minutes of cooking time.

None of the other brands, we previewed, appeared to be constructed as well as the Kuhn Rikon models.

Needless to say, our family considers this set a great value. More important,we use it almost daily.

Kuhn Rikon 12-Quart Duromatic Stockpot Pressure Cooker

Superior Performance
I have been using pressure cookers since I got married back in 1970, have had basically every brand and model out there with the exception of Kuhn Rikon until now. I even have several of the newer digital models and have been pleased with all the performances of all these cookers over the years. With that being said, since I recieved this cooker I am blown away by its superior performance and now understand that there is a vast difference in these cookers. This pressure cooker is milled to such tight specs that you don't even hear it when it is up to pressure and doing its job! And it does its job even better than any of the others I currently own. I am so sorry I never invested in a Kuhn Rikon before. I love chicken and dumplings and so chose that as my test to do in my new cooker. I used a 7 pound hen and put it in the pot with a few seasonings and some water, closed the top and brought it up to low pressure. I couldn't hear it when it indicated it was up to pressure so I made hubby...
The best pressure cooker you can buy
I just received my 12 quart Kuhn Rikon pressure cooker a week ago and I've used it three times already. I was replacing my 30 year old 6 quart Presto cooker mainly because I wanted a larger utensil. I wasn't dissatisfied with my Presto, but until I tried this Kuhn Rikon, I didn't realize that such a gap existed in terms of quality.

I am so glad I chose this Kuhn Rikon 12 quart model. It is a very well built, heavy gauge stainless steel cooker with a nice heavy bottom to help heat it evenly. The handles are sturdy don't get hot while cooking on my gas range. The lid attaches and twists into place very easily with no awkwardness or sticking. The lid gasket is thick and heavy duty. There is no jiggler weight to get lost.

The unit is very quiet. It is so quiet that I almost didn't notice when it had come up to pressure the first time I used it. You have to visually monitor it until you reach your cooking pressure and adjust your heat source to maintain it...
Impressions After a Decade-Plus of Use (see UPDATES)
I'm an avid cook who is a sucker for a high-end gadget. Years ago, when I read rave reviews of the Kuhn-Rikon pressure cookers, I had to try them and, after owning a small unit for several, years, eventually got this giant "hotel" model as a gift. (I found the small cooker interesting, but not very useful, since I find the pressure cooker preferable for things usually done in large batches like stock, soup, beans or pot roast.)

And, for the most part, I really liked the cooker and it still works. I replaced the rubber gasket after about 7 years of use and probably used it 4-6 times per year though, due to some limitations, I've actually used it a lot less of late, in favor of other methods like sous vide (this was my Christmas gift last year: Sous Vide SVK-00001 Supreme Water Oven and it works best for many of the same kinds of food that benefit from pressure cooking) and a plain old...
