All-time best kitchen bargain!
Induction ranges have come way down in price--but for some of us they mean all new cookware. Even the stainless we had before wouldn't work. When we went shopping, I rejected All-Clad because I found the handles uncomfortable, even before we saw the price! Turning to Cook's Illustrated, which I love for its obsessiveness, we learned that Tramontina was rated right next to All-Clad, at a fraction of the cost. We figured it was worth a try, even without seeing it. I was amazed when it arrived, beautiful and comfortable--and with a reprint of the CI review tucked inside. I was even more amazed after using it. Practically non-stick, easy to clean, it's been a joy now for two years. When our son was home for a visit, he used it and was impressed with the difference good cookware makes--so we bought a set for him. We've since added a few extra pieces, including a 1-qt saucepan and a double-handled shallow pan ("Everyday Pan"?). We've been making a lot of ice cream using Jeni Britton...
Not as nice as it looks
My husband purchased the 12 qt size, 4 pc set for me and the instructions from the get go says it needs to be washed by hand. Really? Then while washing it, not even in the house for a full hour yet, the steamer handle rivet shot out and went down the drain. Really? Then after returning it, exchanging it and using it for the first time, the metal decorations on the handles were so hot I couldn't even pick up the pot or remove the lid; kind of important to be able to both while cooking pretty much anything in a pot. So, it's looking like the second pot needs to be returned as well. I would rather that it have less decorations and simply be safe and functional.
